शुक्लाम्बरधरं विष्णुं शशिवर्णं चतुर्भुजम्। प्रसन्नवदनं ध्यायेत् सर्वविघ्नोपशान्तये॥

Shuklambara Dharam Vishnum Shashi Varnam Chatur Bhujam Prasanna Vadanam Dhyayet Sarva Vighno Pasantaye

Meditate on Vishnu, who is clothed in white, who is moon-complexioned and four-armed, Whose face radiates peace and grace, for the removal of all obstacles.

यस्य स्मरणमात्रेण जन्मसंसारबन्धनात्। विमुच्यते नमस्तस्मै विष्णवे प्रभविष्णवे॥

Yasya Smarana Matrena Janma Samsara Bandhanat Vimuchyate Namastasmai Vishnave Prabha Vishnave

By the mere remembrance of whom one is liberated from the bondage of birth and the cycle of existence. Salutations to that all-pervading Vishnu, the mighty and radiant Lord.

नारायणं नमस्कृत्य नरं चैव नरोत्तमम्। देवीं सरस्वतीं व्यासं ततो जयमुदीरयेत्॥

Narayanam Namaskritya Naram Chaiva Narottamam Devim Sarasvatim Vyasam Tato Jayam Udirayet

Having paid homage to Narayana, to Nara the foremost among men, To the goddess Saraswati and to Vyasa, then let one declare victory (begin the recitation).

विश्वं विष्णुर्वषट्कारो भूतभव्यभवत्प्रभुः। भूतकृद्भूतभृद्भावो भूतात्मा भूतभावनः॥

Vishvam Vishnur Vashat Karo Bhuta Bhavya Bhavat Prabhuh Bhuta Krid Bhuta Bhrid Bhavo Bhutaatma Bhuta Bhavanah

He is the Universe (Vishvam); He is Vishnu, the all-pervading; He is Vashat, the lord of oblations. He is the master of past, present, and future; the creator of beings, the sustainer of beings; He is existence itself, the soul of all beings, the one who nourishes all beings.

पूतात्मा परमात्मा च मुक्तानां परमागतिः। अव्ययः पुरुषः साक्षी क्षेत्रज्ञोऽक्षर एव च॥

Putatma Paramatma Cha Muktanam Parama Gatih Avyayah Purushah Sakshi Kshetrajna Akshara Eva Cha

He is the pure-souled one; He is the Supreme Soul; He is the highest goal of the liberated. He is imperishable, the primordial Person, the Witness of all, The knower of the field of existence, and the indestructible.

योगो योगविदां नेता प्रधानपुरुषेश्वरः। नारसिंहवपुः श्रीमान् केशवः पुरुषोत्तमः॥

Yogo Yoga Vidam Neta Pradhana Purusha Ishvarah Nara Simha Vapuh Shriman Keshavah Purushottamah

He is Yoga itself; He is the leader of all yogis; He is the Lord of primordial matter and the cosmic Person. He possesses the form of Narasimha; He is glorious; He is Keshava the beautiful-haired; He is Purushottama, the supreme among all beings.

सर्वः शर्वः शिवः स्थाणुर्भूतादिर्निधिरव्ययः। सम्भवो भावनो भर्ता प्रभवः प्रभुरीश्वरः॥

Sarvah Sharvah Shivah Sthanur Bhutadir Nidhir Avyayah Sambhavo Bhavano Bharta Prabhavah Prabhur Ishvarah

He is all; He is the destroyer; He is auspicious; He is the immovable pillar. He is the source of all elements; He is the inexhaustible treasure. He is the origin; He who manifests; the sustainer; the source of all power; the master; the supreme Lord.

स्वयम्भूः शम्भुरादित्यः पुष्कराक्षो महास्वनः। अनादिनिधनो धाता विधाता धातुरुत्तमः॥

Svayambhuh Shambhur Adityah Pushkaraksha Mahaasvanah Anaadi Nidhano Dhata Vidhata Dhatur Uttamah

He is self-born; He is Shambhu the giver of happiness; He is Aditya, the sun. He is lotus-eyed; He is of great resonance. He is without beginning or end; He is the ordainer; the creator of all; He is the ultimate support of all elements.

अप्रमेयो हृषीकेशः पद्मनाभोऽमरप्रभुः। विश्वकर्मा मनुस्त्वष्टा स्थविष्ठः स्थविरो ध्रुवः॥

Aprameyo Hrishikeshah Padmanabho Amara Prabhuh Vishvakarma Manus Tvashtha Stavishthah Sthaviro Dhruvah

He is immeasurable; He is Hrishikesha, master of the senses; He is Padmanabha, lotus-naveled. He is the Lord of the immortals; He is the architect of the universe; He is Manu. He is the master craftsman; He is the most massive; He is ancient; He is the eternal and fixed.

अग्राह्यः शाश्वतः कृष्णो लोहिताक्षः प्रतर्दनः। प्रभूतस्त्रिककुब्धाम पवित्रं मङ्गलं परम्॥

Agrahyah Shashvatah Krishno Lohitakshah Pratardanah Prabhutah Trikakub Dhama Pavitram Mangalam Param

He is Agrahya: beyond the grasp of the mind and senses, incomprehensible to thought; He is the eternal; He is Krishna the dark one; He is the red-eyed one. He is the destroyer; He is the abundant; He is the abode of the three realms; He is the supremely pure, the supremely auspicious.

ईशानः प्राणदः प्राणो ज्येष्ठः श्रेष्ठः प्रजापतिः। हिरण्यगर्भो भूगर्भो माधवो मधुसूदनः॥

Ishana Pranadah Prano Jyesthah Shreshthah Prajapati Hiranyagarbho Bhugarbho Madhavo Madhusudanah

He is Ishana, the sovereign; He bestows life-breath; He is the vital force itself. He is the eldest and most excellent; He is Prajapati, lord of all creatures. He is Hiranyagarbha, the golden womb; He is the womb of the earth; He is Madhava, the lord of Lakshmi; He is Madhusudana, the slayer of Madhu.

ईश्वरो विक्रमी धन्वी मेधावी विक्रमः क्रमः। अनुत्तमो दुराधर्षः कृतज्ञः कृतिरात्मवान्॥

Ishvaro Vikrami Dhanvi Medhavi Vikramah Kramah Anuttamo Duradharsah Kritajnah Kritir Atmavan

He is the Lord; the powerful and brave; the wielder of the bow; the wise one. He is prowess and orderly progression. He is unsurpassed; He is unapproachable; He is the grateful knower of all deeds; He is skillful action; He is the self-possessed one.

सुरेशः शरणं शर्म विश्वरेताः प्रजाभवः। अहः संवत्सरो व्यालः प्रत्ययः सर्वदर्शनः॥

Sureshah Sharanam Sharma Vishvaretas Prajabhavah Ahah Samvatsaro Vyalah Pratyayah Sarva Darshanah

He is the Lord of the gods; He is the refuge; He is bliss. He is the seed of the universe; He is the origin of all creatures. He is the day; He is the year; He is the serpent-like moving time. He is the conviction of all; He who sees all.

अजः सर्वेश्वरः सिद्धः सिद्धिः सर्वादिरच्युतः। वृषाकपिरमेयात्मा सर्वयोगविनिःसृतः॥

Ajah Sarveshvarah Siddhah Siddhih Sarvadira Chyutah Vrisha Kapir Ameyatma Sarva Yoga Vinisritah

He is unborn; He is the Lord of all; He is the accomplished one; He is perfection itself. He is the beginning of all; He is Achyuta, the infallible. He is Vrishakapi; He is of immeasurable nature; He is transcendent beyond all yogas.

वसुर्वसुमनाः सत्यः समात्मा सम्मितः समः। अमोघः पुण्डरीकाक्षो वृषकर्मा वृषाकृतिः॥

Vasur Vasumanah Satyah Samatma Sammitah Samah Amoghah Pundarikaksho Vrishakarmaa Vrishakritih

He is Vasu, the treasure; He is of good mind; He is truth. He is equal-souled, perfectly proportioned, equitable to all. He is unerring in purpose; He is Pundarikaksha, the lotus-eyed one, whose gaze embodies divine beauty and compassion; His actions are righteous; His very form is righteousness.

रुद्रो बहुशिरा बभ्रुर्विश्वयोनिः शुचिश्रवाः। अमृतः शाश्वतस्थाणुर्वरारोहो महातपाः॥

Rudro Bahushira Babhru Vishvayonih Shuchi Shravah Amritah Shashvata Sthanur Vararoho Maha Tapah

He is Rudra; He has many heads; He is Babhru the supporter. He is the womb of the universe; He is of pure renown. He is immortal; He is the eternal pillar; He is of noble form; He is of great austerity.

सर्वगः सर्वविद्भानुर्विष्वक्सेनो जनार्दनः। वेदो वेदविदव्यङ्गो वेदाङ्गो वेदवित्कविः॥

Sarvagah Sarvavidbhanur Vishvakseno Janardanah Vedo Vedavid Avyango Vedango Vedavit Kavih

He is all-pervading; He is all-knowing; He is the sun, the illuminator. He is Vishvaksena, commander of the celestial armies; He is Janardana, stirrer of mankind. He is the Veda; He is the knower of the Vedas; He is without impairment; He is the limbs of the Vedas; He is the wise seer.

लोकाध्यक्षः सुराध्यक्षो धर्माध्यक्षः कृताकृतः। चतुरात्मा चतुर्व्यूहश्चतुर्दंष्ट्रश्चतुर्भुजः॥

Lokadhyaksha Suradhyaksha Dharmadhyaksha Kritakritah Chatur Atma Chatur Vyuho Chatur Damshtras Chatur Bhujah

He is the overseer of the worlds; the overseer of the gods; the overseer of dharma. He is both the done and undone. He is four-natured; He manifests in four forms (Vyuhas); He has four tusks; He is four-armed.

भ्राजिष्णुर्भोजनं भोक्ता सहिष्णुर्जगदादिजः। अनघो विजयो जेता विश्वयोनिः पुनर्वसुः॥

Bhrajishnur Bhojanam Bhokta Sahishnur Jagadadijah Anagho Vijayo Jeta Vishvayonih Punarvasuh

He is radiant; He is the feast; He is the enjoyer. He is patient and forbearing; He is the first-born of the universe. He is sinless; He is victory; He is the victorious one. He is the womb of the universe; He is Punarvasu, the restorer.

उपेन्द्रो वामनः प्रांशुरमोघः शुचिरूर्जितः। अतीन्द्रः संग्रहः सर्गो धृतात्मा नियमो यमः॥

Upendro Vamanah Pramshu Amoghah Shuchir Urjitah Ati Indrah Sangrahah Sargo Dhritatma Niyamo Yamah

He is Upendra, the younger brother of Indra; He is Vamana, the dwarf; He is the tall one; He is unerring; He is pure; He is the mighty one. He surpasses Indra; He is the collector; He is creation itself; He is the upholder of souls; He is rule and restraint; He is Yama, the lord of dharma.

वेद्यो वैद्यः सदायोगी वीरहा माधवो मधुः। अतीन्द्रियो महामायो महोत्साहो महाबलः॥

Vedyo Vaidyah Sada Yogi Viraha Madhavo Madhuh Atindriyah Maha Mayo Maha Utsaho Maha Balah

He is the knowable; He is the physician; He is ever established in yoga. He is the slayer of heroes; He is Madhava; He is Madhu, sweetness itself. He is beyond the senses; He is the great wielder of Maya; He is of great enthusiasm; He is of great strength.

महाबुद्धिर्महावीर्यो महाशक्तिर्महाद्युतिः। अनिर्देश्यवपुः श्रीमानमेयात्मा महाद्रिधृक्॥

Maha Buddhir Maha Viryah Maha Shaktir Maha Dyutih Anirdesha Vapuh Shriman Ameyatma Mahadri Dhruk

He is of great intelligence; He is of great valor; He is of great power; He is of great brilliance. His form is indescribable; He is glorious and radiant; His nature is immeasurable; He bears the great mountain.

महेष्वासो महीभर्ता श्रीनिवासः सतां गतिः। अनिरुद्धः सुरानन्दो गोविन्दो गोविदां पतिः॥

Maheshvaso Mahi Bharta Shri Nivasah Satam Gatih Aniruddhah Suranando Govindo Govidam Patih

He is the wielder of the great bow; He is the bearer of the earth. He is Shrinivasa, the abode of Lakshmi; He is the path for the virtuous. He is Aniruddha, the unstoppable; He is the joy of the gods. He is Govinda, the protector of cows and the earth; He is the lord of the wise.

मरीचिर्दमनो हंसः सुपर्णो भुजगोत्तमः। हिरण्यनाभः सुतपाः पद्मनाभः प्रजापतिः॥

Marichir Damano Hamsah Suparno Bhujagottamah Hiranya Nabhah Sutapah Padmanabhah Prajapatih

He is Marichi, the ray of divine light; the subduer of the wicked; the swan gliding untouched through the waters of existence. He is the golden-winged one; the best of serpents, resting upon Ananta. His navel is golden; His austerity is glorious; He is lotus-naveled; He is the lord of all creatures.

अमृत्युः सर्वदृक् सिंहः सन्धाता सन्धिमान् स्थिरः। अजो दुर्मर्षणः शास्ता विश्रुतात्मा सुरारिहा॥

Amrityuh Sarvadrik Simhah Sandhata Sandhiman Sthirah Ajo Durmarshanah Shasta Vishrutatma Surariha

He is beyond death; the all-seeing; the lion of fearless courage. He joins every being to the fruit of its deeds; He is ever united with His devotees; He is steadfast. He is unborn; the wicked cannot withstand Him; He is the teacher and ruler of all; His glory is sung in every world; He is the slayer of the enemies of the gods.

गुरुर्गुरुतमो धाम सत्यः सत्यपराक्रमः। निमिषोऽनिमिषः स्रग्वी वाचस्पतिरुदारधीः॥

Gurur Gurutamo Dhama Satyah Satya Parakramah Nimisho Animishah Sragvi Vachaspatir Udaradhih

He is the teacher, and the greatest of all teachers; He is the supreme abode of light. He is truth; His valor stands ever in the service of truth. His eyes close in yogic rest, yet He never blinks in watching over creation; He wears the unfading garland Vaijayanti; He is the lord of speech, whose wisdom is boundless.

अग्रणीर्ग्रामणीः श्रीमान् न्यायो नेता समीरणः। सहस्रमूर्धा विश्वात्मा सहस्राक्षः सहस्रपात्॥

Agranir Gramanih Shriman Nyayo Neta Samiranah Sahasra Murdha Vishvatma Sahasrakshah Sahasrapat

He leads His devotees to the highest; He is the guide of the multitude of beings; He is glorious. He is justice itself; the leader; the breath that moves all things. He has a thousand heads, a thousand eyes, a thousand feet: the soul of the universe, whose cosmic form no boundary contains.

आवर्तनो निवृत्तात्मा संवृतः सम्प्रमर्दनः। अहः संवर्तको वह्निरनिलो धरणीधरः॥

Avartano Nivrittatma Samvritah Sampramardanah Ahah Samvartako Vahnir Anilo Dharani Dharah

He turns the unseen wheel of time, yet His own nature is withdrawn from its turning. He is veiled from eyes without devotion; He crushes all that opposes dharma. He is the day that awakens the world; the fire that carries the offering; the wind that needs no dwelling; the bearer of the earth.

सुप्रसादः प्रसन्नात्मा विश्वधृग्विश्वभुग्विभुः। सत्कर्ता सत्कृतः साधुर्जह्नुर्नारायणो नरः॥

Suprasadah Prasannatma Vishva Dhrig Vishva Bhug Vibhuh Satkarta Satkritah Sadhur Jahnur Narayano Narah

His grace is supreme; His mind is ever serene. He upholds the universe, enjoys the universe, and pervades it as its master. He honors the good and is honored by them; He is the righteous one; He is Jahnu, who leads humanity; Narayana, the resting place of all beings; and Nara, the imperishable spirit within man.

असङ्ख्येयोऽप्रमेयात्मा विशिष्टः शिष्टकृच्छुचिः। सिद्धार्थः सिद्धसङ्कल्पः सिद्धिदः सिद्धिसाधनः॥

Asankhyeyo Aprameyatma Vishishtah Shishta Krit Shuchih Siddharthah Siddha Sankalpah Siddhidah Siddhi Sadhanah

His names and forms are countless; His nature is beyond all measure. He is exalted above all; He establishes the noble in righteousness; He is purity itself. His purposes are already accomplished; His will is fulfilled the moment it arises; He grants perfection, and He is Himself the means of attaining it.

वृषाही वृषभो विष्णुर्वृषपर्वा वृषोदरः। वर्धनो वर्धमानश्च विविक्तः श्रुतिसागरः॥

Vrishahi Vrishabho Vishnur Vrisha Parva Vrishodarah Vardhano Vardhamanash Cha Viviktah Shruti Sagarah

His days are days of dharma; He showers blessings on all beings; He is Vishnu, the all-pervading. The steps of the ladder to Him are steps of righteousness; dharma is His very center. He causes all creation to flourish and Himself grows boundlessly in glory; He stands apart from all, untouched; He is the ocean into which all the Vedas flow.

सुभुजो दुर्धरो वाग्मी महेन्द्रो वसुदो वसुः। नैकरूपो बृहद्रूपः शिपिविष्टः प्रकाशनः॥

Subhujo Durdharo Vagmi Mahendro Vasudo Vasuh Naika Rupo Brihad Rupah Shipivishtah Prakashanah

His arms are mighty and beautiful, raised for the protection of the worlds; none can contain Him; His speech is the source of all eloquence. He is the great Lord of lords; the giver of wealth, and Himself the treasure given. His forms are many; His form is vast beyond imagining; He dwells within the rays of light; He illumines all things.

ओजस्तेजोद्युतिधरः प्रकाशात्मा प्रतापनः। ऋद्धः स्पष्टाक्षरो मन्त्रश्चन्द्रांशुर्भास्करद्युतिः॥

Ojas Tejo Dyutidharah Prakashatma Pratapanah Riddhah Spashtaksharo Mantrash Chandramshur Bhaskara Dyutih

He bears all vigor, brilliance, and radiance; His very being is light; He scorches the enemies of dharma. He is abundance itself; He is the mantra whose syllables ring perfectly clear; He is cooling like the rays of the moon, and dazzling like the splendor of the sun.

अमृतांशूद्भवो भानुः शशबिन्दुः सुरेश्वरः। औषधं जगतः सेतुः सत्यधर्मपराक्रमः॥

Amritamshudbhavo Bhanuh Shashabinduh Sureshvarah Aushadham Jagatah Setuh Satya Dharma Parakramah

From Him arose the nectar-rayed moon, churned from the ocean of milk; He is the sun. He is the moon-marked one; the Lord of the gods. He is the medicine that heals the disease of worldly existence; He is the bridge by which beings cross over; His valor stands eternally on the side of truth and dharma.

भूतभव्यभवन्नाथः पवनः पावनोऽनलः। कामहा कामकृत्कान्तः कामः कामप्रदः प्रभुः॥

Bhuta Bhavya Bhavan Nathah Pavanah Pavano Analah Kamaha Kamakrit Kantah Kamah Kamapradah Prabhuh

He is the master of what was, what will be, and what is; He is the wind that moves all; the purifier; the fire of life. He destroys craving in the hearts of seekers, and awakens the longing that leads to Him; He is the beloved; He is love itself; the fulfiller of every righteous desire; the Lord.

युगादिकृद्युगावर्तो नैकमायो महाशनः। अदृश्योऽव्यक्तरूपश्च सहस्रजिदनन्तजित्॥

Yugadi Krid Yugavarto Naika Mayo Mahashanah Adrishyo Avyakta Rupash Cha Sahasrajid Anantajit

He set the ages in motion and turns them in endless cycles; His maya wears countless forms; He is the great devourer at the end of time. He is invisible to the outward eye; His true form remains unmanifest; He is the conqueror of thousands; the conqueror whom none can outlast.

इष्टोऽविशिष्टः शिष्टेष्टः शिखण्डी नहुषो वृषः। क्रोधहा क्रोधकृत्कर्ता विश्वबाहुर्महीधरः॥

Ishto Avishishtah Shishteshtah Shikhandi Nahusho Vrishah Krodhaha Krodha Krit Karta Vishva Bahur Mahi Dharah

He is beloved of all; He dwells equally in every being; He is cherished by the wise. He wears the peacock feather (as Krishna); He binds all beings with His maya; He is the rain of dharma. He dissolves anger in the hearts of the righteous and turns His own wrath upon adharma; He is the doer of all; His arms embrace the universe; He upholds the earth.

अच्युतः प्रथितः प्राणः प्राणदो वासवानुजः। अपांनिधिरधिष्ठानमप्रमत्तः प्रतिष्ठितः॥

Achyutah Prathitah Pranah Pranado Vasavanujah Apam Nidhir Adhishthanam Apramattah Pratishthitah

He is Achyuta, who never falls from His own glory and never lets His devotee fall. He is renowned through all creation; He is the life-breath and its giver; He is Vamana, born as the younger brother of Indra. He is the ocean, the treasury of all waters; the foundation upon which everything rests; He is never heedless for even a moment; He stands established in His own greatness.

स्कन्दः स्कन्दधरो धुर्यो वरदो वायुवाहनः। वासुदेवो बृहद्भानुरादिदेवः पुरन्दरः॥

Skandah Skanda Dharo Dhuryo Varado Vayu Vahanah Vasudevo Brihad Bhanur Adidevah Purandarah

He flows through creation like quicksilver; He upholds Skanda, the commander of the divine armies; He bears the burden of all worlds. He grants every boon; the winds themselves are His bearers. He is Vasudeva, who dwells in all things and in whom all things dwell; the vast sun of creation; the first of the gods; the destroyer of the strongholds of evil.

अशोकस्तारणस्तारः शूरः शौरिर्जनेश्वरः। अनुकूलः शतावर्तः पद्मी पद्मनिभेक्षणः॥

Ashokas Taranas Tarah Shurah Shaurir Janeshvarah Anukulah Shatavartah Padmi Padma Nibhekshanah

He is beyond sorrow, and He lifts sorrow from all who come to Him; He carries beings across the flood; He is the deliverer. He is the hero; Shauri, descendant of the valiant Shura; the Lord of all people. He is favorable to every being like a friend; He whirls in a hundred currents of creation; He holds the lotus; His eyes are gentle as lotus petals.

पद्मनाभोऽरविन्दाक्षः पद्मगर्भः शरीरभृत्। महर्द्धिर्ऋद्धो वृद्धात्मा महाक्षो गरुडध्वजः॥

Padmanabho Aravindakshah Padma Garbhah Sharira Bhrit Maharddhir Riddho Vriddhatma Mahaksho Garuda Dhvajah

From His lotus navel Brahma the creator arose; His eyes are like lotus petals; He is meditated upon in the lotus of the heart. He sustains every body that lives. His prosperity is immense; He is ever full; His being is more ancient than time; His eyes behold all things; Garuda flies upon His banner.

अतुलः शरभो भीमः समयज्ञो हविर्हरिः। सर्वलक्षणलक्षण्यो लक्ष्मीवान् समितिञ्जयः॥

Atulah Sharabho Bhimah Samayajno Havir Harih Sarva Lakshana Lakshanyo Lakshmivan Samitinjayah

He is beyond all comparison; He dwells within every body; He is awe-inspiring. He knows the right season of all things; He is Hari, who is Himself the offering and the one who receives it. Every auspicious mark points to Him alone; Lakshmi abides with Him eternally; He is victorious in every battle.

विक्षरो रोहितो मार्गो हेतुर्दामोदरः सहः। महीधरो महाभागो वेगवानमिताशनः॥

Viksharo Rohito Margo Hetur Damodarah Sahah Mahidharo Maha Bhago Vegavan Amitashanah

He is imperishable; He appeared as the red-hued fish of the deluge; He is the path and the cause of all that is. He is Damodara, whose waist Yashoda once bound with rope: the infinite Lord consenting to be tied by a mother's love. He is patience; He bears the earth and its mountains; His share of every offering is supreme; His speed is unmatched; His appetite at the great dissolution has no measure.

उद्भवः क्षोभणो देवः श्रीगर्भः परमेश्वरः। करणं कारणं कर्ता विकर्ता गहनो गुहः॥

Udbhavah Kshobhano Devah Shri Garbhah Parameshvarah Karanam Karanam Karta Vikarta Gahano Guhah

From Him all things arise; He stirs the still waters of creation into motion; He is the shining One. All splendor and glory rest within Him as in a womb; He is the supreme Lord. He is the instrument, the cause, and the doer; He unmakes and remakes what He has made; His depths cannot be fathomed; He lies hidden in the cave of every heart.

व्यवसायो व्यवस्थानः संस्थानः स्थानदो ध्रुवः। परर्द्धिः परमस्पष्टस्तुष्टः पुष्टः शुभेक्षणः॥

Vyavasayo Vyavasthanah Samsthanah Sthanado Dhruvah Pararddhih Parama Spashtas Tushtah Pushtah Shubhekshanah

He is unwavering resolve; He is the order in which all things rest. He is the final resting place; He grants each being its rightful station; He is the fixed and certain pole of existence. His glory is supreme; to the wise He is perfectly clear; He is contentment itself, full in every way, and His very glance is a blessing.

रामो विरामो विरजो मार्गो नेयो नयोऽनयः। वीरः शक्तिमतां श्रेष्ठो धर्मो धर्मविदुत्तमः॥

Ramo Viramo Virajo Margo Neyo Nayo Anayah Virah Shaktimatam Shreshtho Dharmo Dharma Vid Uttamah

He is Rama, in whom the righteous delight and in whom yogis find their rest; He is the rest at the end of every journey. He is free of all passion; He is the path, the one who leads, the leading itself, and that which needs no leader. He is the hero; the mightiest of all who bear strength; He is dharma, and the highest of all who know dharma.

वैकुण्ठः पुरुषः प्राणः प्राणदः प्रणवः पृथुः। हिरण्यगर्भः शत्रुघ्नो व्याप्तो वायुरधोक्षजः॥

Vaikunthah Purushah Pranah Pranadah Pranavah Prithuh Hiranya Garbhah Shatrughno Vyapto Vayur Adhokshajah

He is Vaikuntha, who wove the scattered elements into one creation and bars His door to none who seek Him. He is the primal Person; the life-breath and its giver; He is Om, the pranava; He is vast. He is the golden womb from which the cosmos hatched; the destroyer of enemies; He pervades everything; He is the wind; He is Adhokshaja, whom the senses can never reach.

ऋतुः सुदर्शनः कालः परमेष्ठी परिग्रहः। उग्रः संवत्सरो दक्षो विश्रामो विश्वदक्षिणः॥

Rituh Sudarshanah Kalah Parameshthi Parigrahah Ugrah Samvatsaro Daksho Vishramo Vishva Dakshinah

He is the seasons in their turning; He is Sudarshana, whose sight blesses and whose discus protects. He is time itself; He abides in the supreme heights; He receives all that is offered with devotion. He is fierce toward evil; He is the year that measures all lives; He is skillful in all works; He is the resting place of the weary; His generosity faces every direction.

विस्तारः स्थावरस्थाणुः प्रमाणं बीजमव्ययम्। अर्थोऽनर्थो महाकोशो महाभोगो महाधनः॥

Vistarah Sthavara Sthanuh Pramanam Bijam Avyayam Artho Anartho Maha Kosho Maha Bhogo Maha Dhanah

He is the vastness into which all worlds expand; He is the unmoving pillar on which time itself stands; He is the measure of all truth. He is the imperishable seed of everything that becomes. He is the goal all beings seek, yet He Himself needs nothing; He is the great treasury, the great enjoyment, the great wealth.

अनिर्विण्णः स्थविष्ठोऽभूर्धर्मयूपो महामखः। नक्षत्रनेमिर्नक्षत्री क्षमः क्षामः समीहनः॥

Anirvinnah Sthavishtho Abhur Dharma Yupo Maha Makhah Nakshatra Nemir Nakshatri Kshamah Kshamah Samihanah

He knows no weariness and no despair, for He lacks nothing; He is the most immense; He is the unborn. He is the post to which all dharma is tied; He is the great sacrifice. He is the axle around which the stars revolve; He is the moon, lord of the constellations; He is infinite patience; He is what remains when all else has thinned away; He accomplishes all things.

यज्ञ इज्यो महेज्यश्च क्रतुः सत्रं सतां गतिः। सर्वदर्शी विमुक्तात्मा सर्वज्ञो ज्ञानमुत्तमम्॥

Yajna Ijyo Mahejyash Cha Kratuh Satram Satam Gatih Sarva Darshi Vimuktatma Sarvajno Jnanam Uttamam

He is the yajna itself; He is the one worshipped through it, and the greatest of all who are worshipped. He is the rite; He is the extended sacrifice; He is the refuge and destination of the good. He sees all things; His Self is eternally free; He is the knower of everything; He is knowledge itself in its highest form.

सुव्रतः सुमुखः सूक्ष्मः सुघोषः सुखदः सुहृत्। मनोहरो जितक्रोधो वीरबाहुर्विदारणः॥

Suvratah Sumukhah Sukshmah Sughoshah Sukhadah Suhrit Manoharo Jita Krodho Vira Bahur Vidaranah

His vows never fail; His face is ever gracious; He is subtler than the subtlest thing. His voice is the deep thunder of the Vedas; He gives joy; He is the friend who asks nothing in return. He steals the heart of all who behold Him; He has conquered anger; His arms are heroic; He tears apart those who live by adharma.

स्वापनः स्ववशो व्यापी नैकात्मा नैककर्मकृत्। वत्सरो वत्सलो वत्सी रत्नगर्भो धनेश्वरः॥

Svapanah Svavasho Vyapi Naikatma Naika Karma Krit Vatsaro Vatsalo Vatsi Ratna Garbho Dhaneshvarah

He draws all beings into sleep at the great dissolution; He alone is subject to none; He pervades everything. He is one Self appearing as many; His works are beyond counting. All time dwells within Him; He is tender toward His devotees as a cow toward her calf; He is the womb of all jewels, as the ocean that yielded its treasures; He is the lord of all wealth.

धर्मगुब्धर्मकृद्धर्मी सदसत्क्षरमक्षरम्। अविज्ञाता सहस्रांशुर्विधाता कृतलक्षणः॥

Dharmagub Dharmakrid Dharmi Sadasat Ksharam Aksharam Avijnata Sahasramshur Vidhata Krita Lakshanah

He guards dharma, enacts dharma, and is Himself dharma. He is being and non-being; the perishing world and the imperishable spirit within it. No mind fully comprehends Him; He is the thousand-rayed sun; He ordains the course of all things; every mark of perfection is His.

गभस्तिनेमिः सत्त्वस्थः सिंहो भूतमहेश्वरः। आदिदेवो महादेवो देवेशो देवभृद्गुरुः॥

Gabhasti Nemih Sattva Sthah Simho Bhuta Maheshvarah Adidevo Mahadevo Devesho Devabhrid Guruh

He is the hub of the wheel of the sun's rays; He abides in pure sattva; He is the lion. He is the great Lord of all beings. He is the first of the gods; the great God; the sovereign whom the gods obey; He sustains the celestials and is their teacher.

उत्तरो गोपतिर्गोप्ता ज्ञानगम्यः पुरातनः। शरीरभूतभृद्भोक्ता कपीन्द्रो भूरिदक्षिणः॥

Uttaro Gopatir Gopta Jnana Gamyah Puratanah Sharira Bhuta Bhrid Bhokta Kapindro Bhuri Dakshinah

He lifts beings up and out of the ocean of samsara; He is the master of the earth and of speech; He is the protector. He is reached through knowledge alone; He is older than the oldest things. He sustains the elements of which every body is made, and He is the enjoyer within; He is the Lord of the vanaras (as Rama, whom Hanuman served); His generosity in giving has no limit.

सोमपोऽमृतपः सोमः पुरुजित्पुरुसत्तमः। विनयो जयः सत्यसन्धो दाशार्हः सात्वतां पतिः॥

Somapo Amritapah Somah Purujit Puru Sattamah Vinayo Jayah Satya Sandho Dasharhah Satvatam Patih

He drinks the soma of every sacrifice; He drinks the nectar of immortality; He is the moon that nourishes all growing things. He conquers multitudes; He is the noblest among the many. He is humility in the humble and victory in the victorious; His word is never broken; He was born in the line of Dasharha; He is the Lord of the Satvatas, the family of the devoted.

जीवो विनयिता साक्षी मुकुन्दोऽमितविक्रमः। अम्भोनिधिरनन्तात्मा महोदधिशयोऽन्तकः॥

Jivo Vinayita Sakshi Mukundo Amita Vikramah Ambho Nidhir Anantatma Mahodadhishayo Antakah

He is the life in every creature; He humbles the proud and guides the humble; He is the silent witness of all deeds. He is Mukunda, the giver of liberation; His stride cannot be measured. He is the ocean in which all waters rest; His Self has no end; He reclines upon the great ocean in yogic sleep; and He is the end of all things.

अजो महार्हः स्वाभाव्यो जितामित्रः प्रमोदनः। आनन्दो नन्दनो नन्दः सत्यधर्मा त्रिविक्रमः॥

Ajo Maharhah Svabhavyo Jitamitrah Pramodanah Anando Nandano Nandah Satya Dharma Trivikramah

He is unborn; worthy of the highest worship; He exists by His own nature, depending on nothing. He has already conquered every enemy; He fills the heart with gladness. He is bliss; He is the giver of delight; He is joy complete in itself; His dharma is truth; He is Trivikrama, whose three strides measured out earth, sky, and heaven.

महर्षिः कपिलाचार्यः कृतज्ञो मेदिनीपतिः। त्रिपदस्त्रिदशाध्यक्षो महाशृङ्गः कृतान्तकृत्॥

Maharshih Kapilacharyah Kritajno Medini Patih Tripadas Tridashadhyaksho Maha Shringah Kritanta Krit

He is the great sage Kapila, the teacher of the path of discriminating knowledge. He forgets no act of devotion, however small; He is the lord of the earth. His three strides hold the worlds; He presides over the thirty gods; He is the great-horned fish who towed the ark through the deluge; He brings even death itself to an end.

महावराहो गोविन्दः सुषेणः कनकाङ्गदी। गुह्यो गभीरो गहनो गुप्तश्चक्रगदाधरः॥

Maha Varaho Govindah Sushenah Kanakangadi Guhyo Gabhiro Gahano Guptash Chakra Gada Dharah

He is the great boar Varaha, who dove into the primordial waters and raised the drowned earth upon His tusks; He is Govinda. His armies are invincible; His armlets are of gold. He is the secret taught in the Upanishads; unfathomable, deep, and hidden; He bears the discus and the mace for the protection of the worlds.

वेधाः स्वाङ्गोऽजितः कृष्णो दृढः सङ्कर्षणोऽच्युतः। वरुणो वारुणो वृक्षः पुष्कराक्षो महामनाः॥

Vedhah Svango Ajitah Krishno Dridhah Sankarshano Achyutah Varuno Varuno Vrikshah Pushkarakshah Maha Manah

He is the ordainer of creation; He needs no instrument but Himself; He is unconquered; He is Krishna, the dark and all-attracting one. He is firm beyond shaking; He is Sankarshana, who draws all beings into one at the dissolution; He is Achyuta, who never falls. He is Varuna, who gathers in his rays at evening; He dwells in the sages of Varuna's line; He is the tree of shelter for all; lotus-eyed; His heart is vast with compassion.

भगवान् भगहानन्दी वनमाली हलायुधः। आदित्यो ज्योतिरादित्यः सहिष्णुर्गतिसत्तमः॥

Bhagavan Bhagahanandi Vanamali Halayudhah Adityo Jyotir Adityah Sahishnur Gati Sattamah

He is Bhagavan, in whom all glory, strength, dharma, splendor, knowledge, and freedom dwell in fullness; at the dissolution He withdraws them all. He is ever blissful; He wears the forest garland Vaijayanti; He bears the plough (as Balarama). He is the son of Aditi; He is the light that shines within the sun; He endures all things with patience; He is the highest refuge and the surest path.

सुधन्वा खण्डपरशुर्दारुणो द्रविणप्रदः। दिवःस्पृक् सर्वदृग्व्यासो वाचस्पतिरयोनिजः॥

Sudhanva Khanda Parashur Daruno Dravina Pradah Divah Sprik Sarvadrig Vyaso Vachaspatir Ayonijah

He bears the excellent bow Sharnga; He wielded the axe that humbled the arrogant (as Parashurama); He is terrible to those who walk in adharma; He bestows wealth on the devoted. He touches the heavens; He sees all things; He is Vyasa, who divided the one Veda into many for the sake of the world; He is the master of all speech, born of no womb.

त्रिसामा सामगः साम निर्वाणं भेषजं भिषक्। संन्यासकृच्छमः शान्तो निष्ठा शान्तिः परायणम्॥

Trisama Samagah Sama Nirvanam Bheshajam Bhishak Sannyasa Krit Shamah Shanto Nishtha Shantih Parayanam

He is praised by the three great Sama hymns; He is the singer of the Sama and the song itself. He is nirvana, the stilling of every sorrow; He is the medicine, and He is the physician who administers it. He ordained the path of renunciation; He is calmness; He is utterly at peace; He is the final steadiness of the soul; He is shanti; He is the supreme destination.

शुभाङ्गः शान्तिदः स्रष्टा कुमुदः कुवलेशयः। गोहितो गोपतिर्गोप्ता वृषभाक्षो वृषप्रियः॥

Shubhangah Shantidah Srashta Kumudah Kuvaleshayah Gohito Gopatir Gopta Vrishabhaksho Vrisha Priyah

His every limb is auspicious; He bestows peace; He is the creator of all. He delights in the earth as the kumuda flower delights in water; He rests upon the cosmic waters. He works the welfare of the cows and the earth (as Krishna the cowherd); He is their master and protector; His eyes rain dharma upon the world; dharma is dear to Him above all.

अनिवर्ती निवृत्तात्मा सङ्क्षेप्ता क्षेमकृच्छिवः। श्रीवत्सवक्षाः श्रीवासः श्रीपतिः श्रीमतां वरः॥

Anivarti Nivrittatma Sankshepta Kshema Krit Shivah Shrivatsa Vakshah Shrivasah Shripatih Shrimatam Varah

He never retreats from battle or from His purpose; His Self is forever withdrawn from craving. He gathers the vast universe into a seed at the dissolution; He guards what His devotees have gained; He is Shiva, the purely auspicious. The mark of Shrivatsa shines on His chest; Lakshmi dwells upon Him always; He is the Lord of Shri; the highest of all who possess glory.

श्रीदः श्रीशः श्रीनिवासः श्रीनिधिः श्रीविभावनः। श्रीधरः श्रीकरः श्रेयः श्रीमाँल्लोकत्रयाश्रयः॥

Shridah Shrishah Shrinivasah Shrinidhih Shri Vibhavanah Shridharah Shrikarah Shreyah Shriman Loka Trayashrayah

He gives Shri, all grace and prosperity; He is the Lord of Shri; He is her eternal dwelling. He is the treasury of Shri; He causes Shri to blossom in those who are devoted; He bears Shri upon His chest; He places Shri in the hands of the good; He is the supreme good itself; Full of Shri, He is the shelter of the three worlds.

स्वक्षः स्वङ्गः शतानन्दो नन्दिर्ज्योतिर्गणेश्वरः। विजितात्माऽविधेयात्मा सत्कीर्तिश्छिन्नसंशयः॥

Svakshah Svangah Shatanando Nandir Jyotir Ganeshvarah Vijitatma Avidheyatma Satkirtish Chinna Samshayah

His eyes are beautiful; His limbs are beautiful; His bliss is hundredfold, refracted through all beings. He is joy itself; He is the Lord of the hosts of lights. He has fully mastered Himself, yet He can be commanded by no one; His fame rests upon truth; He cuts through every doubt like the sun through mist.

उदीर्णः सर्वतश्चक्षुरनीशः शाश्वतस्थिरः। भूशयो भूषणो भूतिर्विशोकः शोकनाशनः॥

Udirnah Sarvatash Chakshur Anishah Shashvata Sthirah Bhushayo Bhushano Bhutir Vishokah Shoka Nashanah

He rises above all beings; His eyes are on every side; He has no master above Him. He is eternal and unshakably still. He lay upon the bare earth (as Rama on the shore, awaiting the sea's answer); He is the ornament of creation; He is glory itself; He is beyond sorrow, and He is the destroyer of sorrow.

अर्चिष्मानर्चितः कुम्भो विशुद्धात्मा विशोधनः। अनिरुद्धोऽप्रतिरथः प्रद्युम्नोऽमितविक्रमः॥

Archishman Architah Kumbho Vishuddhatma Vishodhanah Aniruddho Apratirathah Pradyumno Amita Vikramah

He is radiant with His own light; He is worshipped by all the worlds; He is the vessel in which everything is held. His Self is stainlessly pure, and He purifies all who remember Him. He is Aniruddha, whom no enemy has ever obstructed; no chariot can stand against Him in battle; He is Pradyumna of surpassing wealth; His valor is beyond measure.

कालनेमिनिहा वीरः शौरिः शूरजनेश्वरः। त्रिलोकात्मा त्रिलोकेशः केशवः केशिहा हरिः॥

Kalanemi Niha Virah Shaurih Shura Janeshvarah Triloka Atma Trilokeshah Keshavah Keshiha Harih

He slew the demon Kalanemi; He is the hero; Shauri of the Vrishni line; He is the Lord of the valiant. He is the soul of the three worlds and their sovereign; He is Keshava, whose locks stream with light; the slayer of the horse-demon Keshi; He is Hari, who carries away sorrow and sin.

कामदेवः कामपालः कामी कान्तः कृतागमः। अनिर्देश्यवपुर्विष्णुर्वीरोऽनन्तो धनञ्जयः॥

Kamadevah Kamapalah Kami Kantah Kritagamah Anirdeshya Vapur Vishnur Viro Ananto Dhananjayah

He is the true fulfiller of desire; the guardian of those who long for Him; every rightful desire finds its home in Him; He is the beloved. He is the author of the sacred scriptures. His form is beyond all pointing and describing; He is Vishnu; He is the hero; He is Ananta, the endless; He is Dhananjaya, the winner of all treasure.

ब्रह्मण्यो ब्रह्मकृद् ब्रह्मा ब्रह्म ब्रह्मविवर्धनः। ब्रह्मविद् ब्राह्मणो ब्रह्मी ब्रह्मज्ञो ब्राह्मणप्रियः॥

Brahmanyo Brahmakrid Brahma Brahma Brahma Vivardhanah Brahmavid Brahmano Brahmi Brahmajno Brahmana Priyah

He cherishes all that is of Brahman: the Veda, austerity, and those who seek truth; He brought forth Brahma the creator. He is the creator; He is Brahman itself; He causes the knowledge of Brahman to grow. He knows Brahman; He speaks it; all that is of Brahman rests in Him; He knows its deepest secret; and those who know it are dear to Him.

महाक्रमो महाकर्मा महातेजा महोरगः। महाक्रतुर्महायज्वा महायज्ञो महाहविः॥

Maha Kramo Maha Karma Maha Teja Mahoragah Maha Kratur Maha Yajva Maha Yajno Maha Havih

His strides are vast; His deeds are vast; His splendor is vast; He is the great serpent Ananta on whom the worlds rest. He is the great rite; the great performer of sacrifice; He is the great yajna itself; and He is the great oblation poured into the fire.

स्तव्यः स्तवप्रियः स्तोत्रं स्तुतिः स्तोता रणप्रियः। पूर्णः पूरयिता पुण्यः पुण्यकीर्तिरनामयः॥

Stavyah Stava Priyah Stotram Stutih Stota Rana Priyah Purnah Purayita Punyah Punya Kirtir Anamayah

He is worthy of all praise and delights in praise; He is the hymn, the act of praising, and the one who praises. He loves the battle fought for righteousness. He is full, lacking nothing, and He fills all beings with what they lack; He is purity; His fame itself purifies; no disease of body or spirit touches Him.

मनोजवस्तीर्थकरो वसुरेता वसुप्रदः। वसुप्रदो वासुदेवो वसुर्वसुमना हविः॥

Manojavas Tirthakaro Vasureta Vasupradah Vasuprado Vasudevo Vasur Vasumana Havih

He moves swift as thought; He is the maker of the sacred fords by which beings cross over; His essence is the gold of creation. He gives wealth, and He gives it twice: first the world's treasure, then Himself. He is Vasudeva, dwelling in all things; He is the treasure and the treasure-hearted; He is the offering itself.

सद्गतिः सत्कृतिः सत्ता सद्भूतिः सत्परायणः। शूरसेनो यदुश्रेष्ठः सन्निवासः सुयामुनः॥

Sadgatih Satkritih Satta Sadbhutih Sat Parayanah Shuraseno Yadu Shreshthah Sannivasah Suyamunah

He is the path of the good and the goal it leads to; He is every noble act; He is existence itself. He is true being in its fullness; He is the final refuge of the good. His armies are heroic; He is the best of the Yadus (as Krishna); He dwells among the virtuous; His companions play on the blessed banks of the Yamuna.

भूतावासो वासुदेवः सर्वासुनिलयोऽनलः। दर्पहा दर्पदो दृप्तो दुर्धरोऽथापराजितः॥

Bhutavaso Vasudevah Sarvasu Nilayo Analah Darpaha Darpado Dripto Durdharo Atha Aparajitah

All beings dwell in Him, and He dwells in all beings: this is the name Vasudeva. He is the home of every life-breath; His power knows no limit. He humbles the arrogance of the wicked and grants rightful dignity to the righteous; He is ever content in His own bliss; He cannot be held by any force; He has never been defeated.

विश्वमूर्तिर्महामूर्तिर्दीप्तमूर्तिरमूर्तिमान्। अनेकमूर्तिरव्यक्तः शतमूर्तिः शताननः॥

Vishva Murtir Maha Murtir Dipta Murtir Amurtiman Aneka Murtir Avyaktah Shata Murtih Shatananah

The universe itself is His form; His form is vast; His form is blazing light; and yet He is beyond all form. His forms are many; He remains unmanifest behind them all; His forms are a hundred; His faces are a hundred: one Being wearing every mask of creation.

एको नैकः सवः कः किं यत्तत्पदमनुत्तमम्। लोकबन्धुर्लोकनाथो माधवो भक्तवत्सलः॥

Eko Naikah Savah Kah Kim Yat Tat Padam Anuttamam Loka Bandhur Loka Natho Madhavo Bhakta Vatsalah

He is One; He is also the many; He is the sacrifice from which all flows. He is Ka, the syllable of joy; He is the question What and the answer That: the supreme abode beyond which nothing stands. He is the kinsman of the world and its Lord; He is Madhava, the beloved of Lakshmi; tender-hearted toward His devotees.

सुवर्णवर्णो हेमाङ्गो वराङ्गश्चन्दनाङ्गदी। वीरहा विषमः शून्यो घृताशीरचलश्चलः॥

Suvarna Varno Hemango Varangash Chandanangadi Viraha Vishamah Shunyo Ghritashir Achalash Chalah

His color is of gold; His limbs are golden; His form is beauty itself; sandal-paste and shining armlets adorn Him. He slays the mighty who fight against dharma; nothing stands equal to Him; to the unknowing He appears as emptiness; His blessings flow like poured ghee; He is utterly unmoving, and yet He moves through all things.

अमानी मानदो मान्यो लोकस्वामी त्रिलोकधृक्। सुमेधा मेधजो धन्यः सत्यमेधा धराधरः॥

Amani Manado Manyo Loka Svami Triloka Dhrik Sumedha Medhajo Dhanyah Satya Medha Dharadharah

He claims no honor for Himself, yet gives honor to all; He is worthy of every reverence. He is the master of the worlds; He upholds the three realms. His wisdom is perfect and benevolent; He is born in the sacrifice; He is blessedness itself; His knowledge is always true; He bears the earth as easily as a thought.

तेजोवृषो द्युतिधरः सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरः। प्रग्रहो निग्रहो व्यग्रो नैकशृङ्गो गदाग्रजः॥

Tejo Vrisho Dyutidharah Sarva Shastra Bhritam Varah Pragraho Nigraho Vyagro Naika Shringo Gadagrajah

He rains down splendor as the sun rains light; He bears eternal radiance; He is the best of all who bear weapons. He accepts the reins of the devoted heart (as Arjuna's charioteer), and He restrains the wicked. He is ceaselessly intent upon His devotees; His horns are many (as the fish of the great flood); He is the elder brother of Gada.

चतुर्मूर्तिश्चतुर्बाहुश्चतुर्व्यूहश्चतुर्गतिः। चतुरात्मा चतुर्भावश्चतुर्वेदविदेकपात्॥

Chatur Murtish Chatur Bahush Chatur Vyuhash Chatur Gatih Chatur Atma Chatur Bhavash Chatur Veda Vid Ekapat

He is four-formed and four-armed; He manifests as the four vyuhas: Vasudeva, Sankarshana, Pradyumna, and Aniruddha. He is the four goals of human life, and the four states of the soul; from Him arise the four aims of existence; He knows the four Vedas; yet only one quarter of His glory stands revealed in all creation, three remaining hidden in eternity.

समावर्तोऽनिवृत्तात्मा दुर्जयो दुरतिक्रमः। दुर्लभो दुर्गमो दुर्गो दुरावासो दुरारिहा॥

Samavarto Anivrittatma Durjayo Duratikramah Durlabho Durgamo Durgo Duravaso Durariha

He turns the wheel of samsara with perfect skill, yet His own Self never turns with it, pervading all things always. He cannot be conquered; His command cannot be overstepped even by the sun and wind. He is won only by rare devotion; hard to approach, a fortress to the unprepared; hard indeed is it to house Him in a restless heart; He slays the demons of every difficulty.

शुभाङ्गो लोकसारङ्गः सुतन्तुस्तन्तुवर्धनः। इन्द्रकर्मा महाकर्मा कृतकर्मा कृतागमः॥

Shubhango Loka Sarangah Sutantus Tantu Vardhanah Indra Karma Maha Karma Krita Karma Kritagamah

His limbs are perfect in auspiciousness; like the bee that finds nectar, He draws out the essence of the worlds. He is the beautiful thread on which creation is strung, and He lengthens that thread as the family of beings grows. His deeds are the deeds of Indra in majesty; His works are mighty; all His work is already accomplished; He is the giver of the scriptures.

उद्भवः सुन्दरः सुन्दो रत्ननाभः सुलोचनः। अर्को वाजसनः शृङ्गी जयन्तः सर्वविज्जयी॥

Udbhavah Sundarah Sundo Ratna Nabhah Sulochanah Arko Vajasanah Shringi Jayantah Sarvavij Jayi

He is the origin of all becoming, yet Himself beyond birth; He is beauty itself; His compassion is soft as melting snow. His navel holds the jewel of creation; His eyes are exquisite. He is Arka, the sun, whom even the worshipped worship; He is the giver of food and strength; He is the horned one of the deluge; He is Jayanta, the conqueror of every obstacle; all-knowing and ever victorious.

सुवर्णबिन्दुरक्षोभ्यः सर्ववागीश्वरेश्वरः। महाह्रदो महागर्तो महाभूतो महानिधिः॥

Suvarna Bindur Akshobhyah Sarva Vag Ishvareshvarah Maha Hrado Maha Garto Maha Bhuto Maha Nidhih

His limbs gleam like drops of gold; nothing in any world can shake Him. He is the Lord of all the lords of speech. He is the great lake in which yogis bathe and are refreshed; the great chasm of maya that none can cross without Him; He is the great Being beyond the three times; the great treasure in whom all beings are held like jewels.

कुमुदः कुन्दरः कुन्दः पर्जन्यः पावनोऽनिलः। अमृताशोऽमृतवपुः सर्वज्ञः सर्वतोमुखः॥

Kumudah Kundarah Kundah Parjanyah Pavano Anilah Amritasho Amrita Vapuh Sarvajnah Sarvato Mukhah

He gladdens the earth and delights in her gladness; He pierced the earth as the great boar; He is pure as the white kunda jasmine. He is Parjanya, the rain-cloud that cools every burning heart; the purifier; the wind that never sleeps. He drinks the nectar of His own bliss; His body is immortality itself; He knows all things; His face is turned toward every being at once.

सुलभः सुव्रतः सिद्धः शत्रुजिच्छत्रुतापनः। न्यग्रोधोऽदुम्बरोऽश्वत्थश्चाणूरान्ध्रनिषूदनः॥

Sulabhah Suvratah Siddhah Shatrujit Shatru Tapanah Nyagrodho Udumbaro Ashvatthash Chanura Andhra Nishudanah

He is easily won by pure love, though beyond all price; His vows are perfect; He is eternally accomplished. He conquers the enemies of dharma and scorches the enemies of His devotees. He is the banyan, the udumbara, and the ashvattha: the great sheltering trees beneath which all creation rests; He is the slayer of Chanura, the wrestler of Kamsa's court.

सहस्रार्चिः सप्तजिह्वः सप्तैधाः सप्तवाहनः। अमूर्तिरनघोऽचिन्त्यो भयकृद्भयनाशनः॥

Sahasrarchih Sapta Jihvah Saptaidhah Sapta Vahanah Amurtir Anagho Achintyo Bhayakrid Bhaya Nashanah

His rays are a thousand; His tongues of flame are seven; His sacred fires are seven; seven horses draw His chariot as the sun. He is beyond all form; beyond all sin; beyond the reach of thought. He is the terror of those who abandon dharma, and the destroyer of every fear in those who hold to it.

अणुर्बृहत्कृशः स्थूलो गुणभृन्निर्गुणो महान्। अधृतः स्वधृतः स्वास्यः प्राग्वंशो वंशवर्धनः॥

Anur Brihat Krishah Sthulo Gunabhrin Nirguno Mahan Adhritah Svadhritah Svasyah Pragvamsho Vamsha Vardhanah

He is smaller than the atom and greater than the vast; subtler than the subtle, larger than the gross. He bears all qualities, yet no quality binds Him; He is the Great. Nothing upholds Him; He upholds Himself; from His beautiful mouth the Vedas flowed; His family is the most ancient, for it is creation itself, and He causes every lineage to flourish.

भारभृत् कथितो योगी योगीशः सर्वकामदः। आश्रमः श्रमणः क्षामः सुपर्णो वायुवाहनः॥

Bharabhrit Kathito Yogi Yogishah Sarva Kamadah Ashramah Shramanah Kshamah Suparno Vayu Vahanah

He bears the burden of the worlds; all scriptures speak of Him; He is the yogi, and the Lord of all yogis. He grants every rightful desire. He is the hermitage where wanderers in samsara find rest; He wears down the unrighteous; at the dissolution all grows thin in Him; His wings are the golden wings of the Vedas; the wind itself is His bearer.

धनुर्धरो धनुर्वेदो दण्डो दमयिता दमः। अपराजितः सर्वसहो नियन्ताऽनियमोऽयमः॥

Dhanurdharo Dhanurvedo Dando Damayita Damah Aparajitah Sarvasaho Niyanta Aniyamo Ayamah

He is the wielder of the bow (as Rama, whose arrow never needed a second); He is the science of archery itself. He is the rod of discipline; the subduer of the lawless; He is self-restraint in the restrained. He has never been defeated; He endures and supports all things; He directs every being to its task, yet no rule binds Him and no death claims Him.

सत्त्ववान् सात्त्विकः सत्यः सत्यधर्मपरायणः। अभिप्रायः प्रियार्होऽर्हः प्रियकृत्प्रीतिवर्धनः॥

Sattvavan Sattvikah Satyah Satya Dharma Parayanah Abhiprayah Priyarho Arhah Priyakrit Priti Vardhanah

He is full of courage and strength; He abides in pure sattva; He is truth; He is wholly devoted to truth and dharma. He is the inmost intention behind every prayer; He alone is worthy of what we hold dearest; He is worthy of all worship; He does what is dear to His devotees, and their love for Him deepens without end.

विहायसगतिर्ज्योतिः सुरुचिर्हुतभुग्विभुः। रविर्विरोचनः सूर्यः सविता रविलोचनः॥

Vihayasa Gatir Jyotih Suruchir Hutabhug Vibhuh Ravir Virochanah Suryah Savita Ravi Lochanah

His path is the pathless sky; He is the light of all lights. His radiance is beautiful beyond desire; He receives what is poured into the fire; He pervades everything. He is Ravi, who draws up the waters of the earth; He shines in countless splendors; He is Surya the sun; He is Savita, who brings forth all life at dawn; the sun itself is His eye.

अनन्तो हुतभुग्भोक्ता सुखदो नैकजोऽग्रजः। अनिर्विण्णः सदामर्षी लोकाधिष्ठानमद्भुतः॥

Ananto Hutabhug Bhokta Sukhado Naikajo Agrajah Anirvinnah Sadamarshi Lokadhishthanam Adbhutah

He is Ananta, without end in space, time, or glory; He enjoys the offerings of every sacrifice; He is the enjoyer within all experience. He gives happiness; He is born again and again for dharma's sake, yet He is the first-born of all that is. He knows no despair, for He lacks nothing; He forgives His devotees again and again; He is the foundation on which the worlds stand; He is wonder itself.

सनात्सनातनतमः कपिलः कपिरव्ययः। स्वस्तिदः स्वस्तिकृत्स्वस्ति स्वस्तिभुक्स्वस्तिदक्षिणः॥

Sanat Sanatanatamah Kapilah Kapir Avyayah Svastidah Svastikrit Svasti Svastibhuk Svasti Dakshinah

He is time without beginning, more ancient than the most ancient; He is the sage Kapila; He is the sun that drinks the waters; He is imperishable. He gives well-being; He creates well-being; He is well-being itself; He enjoys the welfare of His devotees as His own, and bestows it freely upon all who turn to Him.

अरौद्रः कुण्डली चक्री विक्रम्यूर्जितशासनः। शब्दातिगः शब्दसहः शिशिरः शर्वरीकरः॥

Araudrah Kundali Chakri Vikrami Urjita Shasanah Shabdatigah Shabda Sahah Shishirah Sharvari Karah

There is no cruelty in Him; His earrings flash like the fish-shaped jewels of the ocean; He bears the discus Sudarshana. His prowess is unmatched; His command stands unbroken through the ages. He is beyond the reach of every word, yet all the Vedas strain toward Him; He is the coolness of shade to the weary, and the maker of the night that gives all beings rest.

अक्रूरः पेशलो दक्षो दक्षिणः क्षमिणां वरः। विद्वत्तमो वीतभयः पुण्यश्रवणकीर्तनः॥

Akrurah Peshalo Daksho Dakshinah Kshaminam Varah Vidvattamo Vita Bhayah Punya Shravana Kirtanah

There is no crookedness in Him; He is gentle and graceful in thought, word, and deed; He is swift and skillful; He is generous and sincere. He is the most patient of all who show patience. He is the wisest of the wise; fear cannot approach Him; merely to hear His name, merely to sing it, is itself a purification.

उत्तारणो दुष्कृतिहा पुण्यो दुःस्वप्ननाशनः। वीरहा रक्षणः सन्तो जीवनः पर्यवस्थितः॥

Uttarano Dushkritiha Punyo Duhsvapna Nashanah Viraha Rakshanah Santo Jivanah Paryavasthitah

He lifts beings up and carries them across the ocean of samsara; He destroys the weight of evil deeds. He is holiness itself; He dispels even the terrors that come in dreams. He cuts the many wandering paths that lead away from Him; He is the protector; He is present in the saintly; He is the life in all that lives; He stands surrounding all things, upholding them on every side.

अनन्तरूपोऽनन्तश्रीर्जितमन्युर्भयापहः। चतुरश्रो गभीरात्मा विदिशो व्यादिशो दिशः॥

Ananta Rupo Ananta Shrir Jita Manyur Bhayapahah Chaturashro Gabhiratma Vidisho Vyadisho Dishah

His forms are endless; His glories are endless. He has conquered anger utterly; He casts out fear from every heart that shelters in Him. He deals with all beings in perfect fairness; His depths cannot be sounded; He is the directions, the spaces between them, and the guidance that each receives.

अनादिर्भूर्भुवो लक्ष्मीः सुवीरो रुचिराङ्गदः। जननो जनजन्मादिर्भीमो भीमपराक्रमः॥

Anadir Bhur Bhuvo Lakshmih Suviro Ruchirangadah Janano Jana Janmadir Bhimo Bhima Parakramah

He is without beginning; He is the ground on which the earth itself rests; He is the radiance and grace of the worlds. He moves in many glorious ways; His armlets shine with beauty. He is the birth-giver of all beings, and the root from which every birth arises; He is terrifying to the lawless; His valor fills the worlds with awe.

आधारनिलयोऽधाता पुष्पहासः प्रजागरः। ऊर्ध्वगः सत्पथाचारः प्राणदः प्रणवः पणः॥

Adhara Nilayo Adhata Pushpa Hasah Prajagarah Urdhvagah Satpathacharah Pranadah Pranavah Panah

He is the support of all supports, yet Himself rests upon nothing. His smile opens like a blossoming flower; He remains awake while the whole world sleeps. He carries upward all who walk the path of the good, and He walks it with them; He is the giver of the life-breath; He is Om, the pranava; He is the supreme wealth for which the wise trade all else.

प्रमाणं प्राणनिलयः प्राणभृत्प्राणजीवनः। तत्त्वं तत्त्वविदेकात्मा जन्ममृत्युजरातिगः॥

Pramanam Prana Nilayah Prana Bhrit Prana Jivanah Tattvam Tattva Vid Ekatma Janma Mrityu Jaratigah

He is the measure by which all truth is known; He is the home into which every life-breath returns. He sustains the breath of every creature; He is the very life of life. He is the Reality (tattva), and He is its knower; He is the one Self shining in all; He has crossed beyond birth, beyond death, beyond old age.

भूर्भुवःस्वस्तरुस्तारः सविता प्रपितामहः। यज्ञो यज्ञपतिर्यज्वा यज्ञाङ्गो यज्ञवाहनः॥

Bhur Bhuvah Svas Tarus Tarah Savita Prapitamahah Yajno Yajna Patir Yajva Yajnango Yajna Vahanah

He is the great tree whose branches are the three worlds: earth, sky, and heaven; He carries beings across; He is Om, the sacred syllable. He brings forth all creation; He is the father of even Brahma, the grandfather of the worlds. He is the yajna, its lord, and its performer; His limbs are the limbs of the sacrifice, and He carries it to its fulfillment.

यज्ञभृद् यज्ञकृद् यज्ञी यज्ञभुग् यज्ञसाधनः। यज्ञान्तकृद् यज्ञगुह्यमन्नमन्नाद एव च॥

Yajnabhrid Yajnakrid Yajni Yajnabhug Yajna Sadhanah Yajnantakrid Yajna Guhyam Annam Annada Eva Cha

He upholds the sacrifice and brings it to completion; He created it; all sacrifice is offered to Him. He enjoys the offering, and He is the means by which it succeeds. He grants the fruit in which every sacrifice ends; He is its innermost secret; He is the food, and He is the eater of food: the whole turning circle of life.

आत्मयोनिः स्वयंजातो वैखानः सामगायनः। देवकीनन्दनः स्रष्टा क्षितीशः पापनाशनः॥

Atma Yonih Svayam Jato Vaikhanah Sama Gayanah Devaki Nandanah Srashta Kshitishah Papa Nashanah

He is His own origin, born of Himself alone, needing no other cause. He dug up the earth from the deluge (as the great boar); He sings the songs of the Sama Veda. He is the delight of Devaki, born as Krishna in the prison of Mathura at midnight; He is the creator; the Lord of the earth; the destroyer of every sin.

शङ्खभृन्नन्दकी चक्री शार्ङ्गधन्वा गदाधरः। रथाङ्गपाणिरक्षोभ्यः सर्वप्रहरणायुधः॥ सर्वप्रहरणायुध ॐ नम इति॥

Shankha Bhrin Nandaki Chakri Sharnga Dhanva Gadadharah Rathanga Panir Akshobhyah Sarva Praharanayudhah Sarva Praharanayudha Om Nama Iti

He bears the conch Panchajanya and the sword Nandaka; His discus is Sudarshana; His bow is Sharnga; His mace is Kaumodaki. He once lifted a chariot wheel as His weapon (breaking His own vow at Kurukshetra, out of love, to make Bhishma's word come true); nothing in existence can shake Him. Every weapon that protects dharma is His. To the wielder of all weapons: Om, salutations! Thus the thousand names conclude.

वनमाली गदी शार्ङ्गी शङ्खी चक्री च नन्दकी। श्रीमान्नारायणो विष्णुर्वासुदेवोऽभिरक्षतु॥

Vanamali Gadi Sharngi Shankhi Chakri Cha Nandaki Shriman Narayano Vishnur Vasudevo Abhirakshatu

Garlanded with forest blossoms, bearing the mace, the bow Sharnga, the conch, the discus, and the sword Nandaka: may that glorious Narayana, Vishnu, Vasudeva, protect us always. This verse is traditionally recited twice, sealing the thousand names with a prayer of protection.

इतीदं कीर्तनीयस्य केशवस्य महात्मनः। नाम्नां सहस्रं दिव्यानामशेषेण प्रकीर्तितम्॥

Itidam Kirtaniyasya Keshavasya Mahatmanah Namnam Sahasram Divyanam Asheshena Prakirtitam

Thus have been sung, leaving nothing out, the thousand divine names of the great-souled Keshava, who is forever worthy of praise.

य इदं शृणुयान्नित्यं यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत्। नाशुभं प्राप्नुयात्किञ्चित्सोऽमुत्रेह च मानवः॥

Ya Idam Shrinuyan Nityam Yash Chapi Parikirtayet Nashubham Prapnuyat Kinchit So Amutreha Cha Manavah

One who listens to this every day, or who recites it, meets with nothing inauspicious, neither in this world nor in the next.

वेदान्तगो ब्राह्मणः स्यात्क्षत्रियो विजयी भवेत्। वैश्यो धनसमृद्धः स्याच्छूद्रः सुखमवाप्नुयात्॥

Vedantago Brahmanah Syat Kshatriyo Vijayi Bhavet Vaishyo Dhana Samriddhah Syat Shudrah Sukham Avapnuyat

By its recitation the seeker of sacred knowledge reaches the summit of the Vedas; the protector becomes victorious; the trader gathers abundant wealth; and the worker attains happiness.

धर्मार्थी प्राप्नुयाद्धर्ममर्थार्थी चार्थमाप्नुयात्। कामानवाप्नुयात्कामी प्रजार्थी चाप्नुयात्प्रजाम्॥

Dharmarthi Prapnuyad Dharmam Artharthi Chartham Apnuyat Kaman Avapnuyat Kami Prajarthi Chapnuyat Prajam

The seeker of dharma gains dharma; the seeker of wealth gains wealth; the seeker of joys attains them; and the one who longs for children is blessed with children.

भक्तिमान् यः सदोत्थाय शुचिस्तद्गतमानसः। सहस्रं वासुदेवस्य नाम्नामेतत्प्रकीर्तयेत्॥

Bhaktiman Yah Sadotthaya Shuchis Tadgata Manasah Sahasram Vasudevasya Namnam Etat Prakirtayet

The devoted one who rises each morning, purified, and with mind resting wholly in Him recites these thousand names of Vasudeva...

यशः प्राप्नोति विपुलं ज्ञातिप्राधान्यमेव च। अचलां श्रियमाप्नोति श्रेयः प्राप्नोत्यनुत्तमम्॥

Yashah Prapnoti Vipulam Jnati Pradhanyam Eva Cha Achalam Shriyam Apnoti Shreyah Prapnoty Anuttamam

...attains far-reaching fame and honor among his people, prosperity that does not waver, and the supreme good beyond which there is nothing higher.

न भयं क्वचिदाप्नोति वीर्यं तेजश्च विन्दति। भवत्यरोगो द्युतिमान् बलरूपगुणान्वितः॥

Na Bhayam Kvachid Apnoti Viryam Tejash Cha Vindati Bhavaty Arogo Dyutiman Bala Rupa Gunanvitah

Fear finds him nowhere; he gains courage and inner fire; free of disease, radiant, he becomes endowed with strength, beauty, and noble character.

रोगार्तो मुच्यते रोगाद्बद्धो मुच्येत बन्धनात्। भयान्मुच्येत भीतस्तु मुच्येतापन्न आपदः॥

Rogarto Muchyate Rogad Baddho Muchyeta Bandhanat Bhayan Muchyeta Bhitas Tu Muchyeta Apanna Apadah

The sick are freed from sickness; the bound are freed from their bonds; the fearful are freed from fear; and those in calamity are delivered from it.

दुर्गाण्यतितरत्याशु पुरुषः पुरुषोत्तमम्। स्तुवन्नामसहस्रेण नित्यं भक्तिसमन्वितः॥

Durgany Atitaraty Ashu Purushah Purushottamam Stuvan Nama Sahasrena Nityam Bhakti Samanvitah

The one who praises Purushottama, the Supreme Person, with these thousand names, constantly and with a heart full of devotion, swiftly crosses every impassable difficulty.

वासुदेवाश्रयो मर्त्यो वासुदेवपरायणः। सर्वपापविशुद्धात्मा याति ब्रह्म सनातनम्॥

Vasudevashrayo Martyo Vasudeva Parayanah Sarva Papa Vishuddhatma Yati Brahma Sanatanam

The mortal who takes refuge in Vasudeva and makes Him the highest aim is cleansed of every sin and reaches the eternal Brahman.

न वासुदेवभक्तानामशुभं विद्यते क्वचित्। जन्ममृत्युजराव्याधिभयं नैवोपजायते॥

Na Vasudeva Bhaktanam Ashubham Vidyate Kvachit Janma Mrityu Jara Vyadhi Bhayam Naivopajayate

For the devotees of Vasudeva nothing inauspicious exists anywhere; the fear of birth, death, old age, and disease never arises in them.

इमं स्तवमधीयानः श्रद्धाभक्तिसमन्वितः। युज्येतात्मसुखक्षान्तिश्रीधृतिस्मृतिकीर्तिभिः॥

Imam Stavam Adhiyanah Shraddha Bhakti Samanvitah Yujyeta Atma Sukha Kshanti Shri Dhriti Smriti Kirtibhih

One who studies this hymn with faith and devotion comes to possess happiness of soul, patience, prosperity, steadiness, clear memory, and renown.

न क्रोधो न च मात्सर्यं न लोभो नाशुभा मतिः। भवन्ति कृतपुण्यानां भक्तानां पुरुषोत्तमे॥

Na Krodho Na Cha Matsaryam Na Lobho Nashubha Matih Bhavanti Krita Punyanam Bhaktanam Purushottame

In those blessed ones who are devoted to Purushottama there arises no anger, no envy, no greed, and no impure thought.

द्यौः सचन्द्रार्कनक्षत्रा खं दिशो भूर्महोदधिः। वासुदेवस्य वीर्येण विधृतानि महात्मनः॥

Dyauh Sa Chandrarka Nakshatra Kham Disho Bhur Mahodadhih Vasudevasya Viryena Vidhritani Mahatmanah

The heavens with their moon, sun, and stars, the sky, the directions, the earth and the great ocean: all are held in place by the power of the great-souled Vasudeva.

ससुरासुरगन्धर्वं सयक्षोरगराक्षसम्। जगद्वशे वर्ततेदं कृष्णस्य सचराचरम्॥

Sa Sura Asura Gandharvam Sa Yaksha Uraga Rakshasam Jagad Vashe Vartatedam Krishnasya Sa Characharam

This whole universe with its gods, demons, and gandharvas, its yakshas, serpents, and rakshasas, all that moves and all that does not, turns within the will of Krishna.

इन्द्रियाणि मनो बुद्धिः सत्त्वं तेजो बलं धृतिः। वासुदेवात्मकान्याहुः क्षेत्रं क्षेत्रज्ञ एव च॥

Indriyani Mano Buddhih Sattvam Tejo Balam Dhritih Vasudevatmakany Ahuh Kshetram Kshetrajna Eva Cha

The senses, the mind, the intellect, vitality, splendor, strength, and steadfastness: all these, the wise declare, are made of Vasudeva; He is the field of this body, and He is the knower of the field.

सर्वागमानामाचारः प्रथमं परिकल्पते। आचारप्रभवो धर्मो धर्मस्य प्रभुरच्युतः॥

Sarva Gamanam Acharah Prathamam Parikalpate Achara Prabhavo Dharmo Dharmasya Prabhur Achyutah

Right conduct stands first among all the teachings of the scriptures; from conduct dharma is born; and the Lord of dharma is Achyuta.

ऋषयः पितरो देवा महाभूतानि धातवः। जङ्गमाजङ्गमं चेदं जगन्नारायणोद्भवम्॥

Rishayah Pitaro Deva Maha Bhutani Dhatavah Jangama Jangamam Chedam Jagan Narayanodbhavam

The rishis, the ancestors, the gods, the great elements, the constituents of the body, and this whole world of the moving and the unmoving: all are born of Narayana.

योगो ज्ञानं तथा साङ्ख्यं विद्याः शिल्पादि कर्म च। वेदाः शास्त्राणि विज्ञानमेतत्सर्वं जनार्दनात्॥

Yogo Jnanam Tatha Sankhyam Vidyah Shilpadi Karma Cha Vedah Shastrani Vijnanam Etat Sarvam Janardanat

Yoga and knowledge, the wisdom of Sankhya, the sciences, the arts, and every craft, the Vedas, the scriptures, and all true understanding: all of it proceeds from Janardana.

एको विष्णुर्महद्भूतं पृथग्भूतान्यनेकशः। त्रील्लोकान्व्याप्य भूतात्मा भुङ्क्ते विश्वभुगव्ययः॥

Eko Vishnur Mahad Bhutam Prithag Bhutany Anekashah Tril Lokan Vyapya Bhutatma Bhunkte Vishvabhug Avyayah

Vishnu is the one great Being, appearing separately as the many; pervading the three worlds as the soul of all beings, He enjoys them all, the imperishable experiencer of the universe.

इमं स्तवं भगवतो विष्णोर्व्यासेन कीर्तितम्। पठेद्य इच्छेत्पुरुषः श्रेयः प्राप्तुं सुखानि च॥

Imam Stavam Bhagavato Vishnor Vyasena Kirtitam Pathed Ya Ichchhet Purushah Shreyah Praptum Sukhani Cha

This hymn to the blessed Vishnu was sung by Vyasa himself: let everyone who wishes to gain the highest good and true happiness recite it.

विश्वेश्वरमजं देवं जगतः प्रभुमव्ययम्। भजन्ति ये पुष्कराक्षं न ते यान्ति पराभवम्॥ न ते यान्ति पराभवम् ॐ नम इति॥

Vishveshvaram Ajam Devam Jagatah Prabhum Avyayam Bhajanti Ye Pushkaraksham Na Te Yanti Parabhavam Na Te Yanti Parabhavam Om Nama Iti

Those who worship the lotus-eyed Lord of the universe, the unborn, imperishable master of all worlds, never come to defeat. Never do they come to defeat: Om, thus it is.

पद्मपत्रविशालाक्ष पद्मनाभ सुरोत्तम। भक्तानामनुरक्तानां त्राता भव जनार्दन॥

Padma Patra Vishalaksha Padmanabha Surottama Bhaktanam Anuraktanam Trata Bhava Janardana

O Lord whose eyes are wide as lotus petals, O Padmanabha, highest of the gods: be the protector, O Janardana, of the devotees who love You.

यो मां नामसहस्रेण स्तोतुमिच्छति पाण्डव। सोऽहमेकेन श्लोकेन स्तुत एव न संशयः॥ स्तुत एव न संशय ॐ नम इति॥

Yo Mam Nama Sahasrena Stotum Ichchhati Pandava So Aham Ekena Shlokena Stuta Eva Na Samshayah Stuta Eva Na Samshaya Om Nama Iti

O son of Pandu, whoever wishes to praise Me with the thousand names: know that I am fully praised by even one single verse of it. Of this there is no doubt. Praised beyond doubt: Om, thus it is.

वासनाद्वासुदेवस्य वासितं भुवनत्रयम्। सर्वभूतनिवासोऽसि वासुदेव नमोऽस्तु ते॥ श्रीवासुदेव नमोऽस्तुत ॐ नम इति॥

Vasanad Vasudevasya Vasitam Bhuvana Trayam Sarva Bhuta Nivaso Asi Vasudeva Namo Astu Te Shri Vasudeva Namo Astuta Om Nama Iti

By the indwelling of Vasudeva the three worlds are made fragrant with His presence. You are the dwelling place of all beings: O Vasudeva, salutations to You. To Shri Vasudeva, salutations: Om, thus it is.

केनोपायेन लघुना विष्णोर्नामसहस्रकम्। पठ्यते पण्डितैर्नित्यं श्रोतुमिच्छाम्यहं प्रभो॥

Kenopayena Laghuna Vishnor Nama Sahasrakam Pathyate Panditair Nityam Shrotum Ichchhamy Aham Prabho

By what simple means, O Lord, may the thousand names of Vishnu be recited daily even by the wise? This I long to hear.

श्रीराम राम रामेति रमे रामे मनोरमे। सहस्रनाम तत्तुल्यं रामनाम वरानने॥

Shri Rama Rama Rameti Rame Rame Manorame Sahasranama Tat Tulyam Rama Nama Varanane

Shri Rama, Rama, Rama: my mind delights in Rama, the delighter of the heart. O fair-faced one, the single name of Rama is equal to the entire thousand names. With this answer to Parvati, Shiva reveals that the whole ocean of the Sahasranama lives within one name spoken with love; the verse is traditionally recited three times.

नमोऽस्त्वनन्ताय सहस्रमूर्तये सहस्रपादाक्षिशिरोरुबाहवे। सहस्रनाम्ने पुरुषाय शाश्वते सहस्रकोटियुगधारिणे नमः॥

Namo Astv Anantaya Sahasra Murtaye Sahasra Padakshi Shiroru Bahave Sahasra Namne Purushaya Shashvate Sahasra Koti Yuga Dharine Namah

Salutations to the Endless One of a thousand forms, of a thousand feet, eyes, heads, and arms; salutations to the eternal Person of a thousand names, who bears upon Himself thousands of crores of ages.

यत्र योगेश्वरः कृष्णो यत्र पार्थो धनुर्धरः। तत्र श्रीर्विजयो भूतिर्ध्रुवा नीतिर्मतिर्मम॥

Yatra Yogeshvarah Krishno Yatra Partho Dhanurdharah Tatra Shrir Vijayo Bhutir Dhruva Nitir Matir Mama

Where there is Krishna, the Lord of yoga, and where there is Arjuna, the wielder of the bow, there abide fortune, victory, prosperity, and unfailing justice: this is my firm conviction.

अनन्याश्चिन्तयन्तो मां ये जनाः पर्युपासते। तेषां नित्याभियुक्तानां योगक्षेमं वहाम्यहम्॥ परित्राणाय साधूनां विनाशाय च दुष्कृताम्। धर्मसंस्थापनार्थाय सम्भवामि युगे युगे॥

Ananyash Chintayanto Mam Ye Janah Paryupasate Tesham Nityabhiyuktanam Yoga Kshemam Vahamy Aham Paritranaya Sadhunam Vinashaya Cha Dushkritam Dharma Samsthapanarthaya Sambhavami Yuge Yuge

Those who think of Me with undivided hearts and worship Me alone: for those ever united with Me, I Myself carry what they lack and protect what they have. For the protection of the good, for the destruction of evil, and for the firm establishment of dharma, I take birth age after age.

आर्ता विषण्णाः शिथिलाश्च भीताः घोरेषु च व्याधिषु वर्तमानाः। सङ्कीर्त्य नारायणशब्दमात्रं विमुक्तदुःखाः सुखिनो भवन्ति॥

Arta Vishannah Shithilash Cha Bhitah Ghoreshu Cha Vyadhishu Vartamanah Sankirtya Narayana Shabda Matram Vimukta Duhkhah Sukhino Bhavanti

The distressed, the despairing, the weakened, the frightened, and those caught in the grip of terrible illness: merely by chanting the name Narayana they are released from sorrow and made happy.

कायेन वाचा मनसेन्द्रियैर्वा बुद्ध्यात्मना वा प्रकृतेः स्वभावात्। करोमि यद्यत्सकलं परस्मै नारायणायेति समर्पयामि॥

Kayena Vacha Manasendriyair Va Buddhyatmana Va Prakriteh Svabhavat Karomi Yadyat Sakalam Parasmai Narayanayeti Samarpayami

Whatever I do with my body, my speech, my mind, or my senses, with my intellect, my heart, or by the promptings of my own nature: all of it, everything, I offer to the supreme Narayana. With this verse of surrender the recitation traditionally ends.
