Vishnu Sahasranama (Dhyana Shlokas and Opening Names)
By Bhishma · 23 Verses · Ancient (Mahabharata era) भीष्म · 23 श्लोक · Ancient (Mahabharata era)
This is a partial presentation covering the dhyana shlokas (meditative invocations) and the first twenty verses of the thousand names. The full Vishnu Sahasranama was recited by Bhishma as he lay on a bed of arrows at the conclusion of the Kurukshetra war in the Mahabharata. When Yudhishthira asked the dying patriarch what single devotion could liberate a person from all suffering, Bhishma responded by reciting the thousand names of Vishnu. The scene is among the most poignant in the epic: a warrior at the threshold of death, choosing to spend his final teaching on the names of God.
