This mantra from the Rig Veda (7.59.12) is attributed to the sage Markandeya, who was destined to die at age sixteen. When Yama, the lord of death, came to claim him, Markandeya clung to a Shiva lingam and chanted this mantra with such intensity that Shiva himself appeared, defeated Yama, and granted the boy immortality. It is known as the 'death-conquering mantra' and is traditionally chanted for healing, protection, and at the bedside of the gravely ill.
